For centuries, Nantucket has stood as a beacon of timeless charm and historical significance, drawing travelers to its cobblestone streets and serene beaches. Among the island’s most iconic landmarks is the Veranda House, an inn whose rich history dates back to the 17th century. Now, after an unfortunate fire in 2022, the Veranda House has been lovingly rebuilt, reimagined, and is ready to welcome guests for an unparalleled experience starting Spring 2025.

The History of Veranda House

Originally constructed as a residence in the early 1600s, the Veranda House’s transformation into an iconic inn began in 1881 when Nathan Chapman purchased the property. Chapman, an inventor, moved his family to Nantucket and converted the house into a boarding house after the Coffin family requested to stay there for their reunion that year. The following summer, the house officially became an inn.

Under Chapman’s ownership, the property underwent significant changes. The house was enlarged, raised, and adorned with three decks, each boasting spacious verandas on all sides. Its proximity to the harbor and the steamboat landing made it a prime location for travelers. Renamed the Overlook Hotel after 1930, the property later reclaimed its original name, the Veranda House, solidifying its place as a cherished Nantucket landmark.

In July 2022, a fire tragically destroyed the original 338-year-old structure. Determined to preserve its legacy, the owners, the Procaccianti Companies, filed plans to rebuild the hotel. Today, the Veranda House has been meticulously reconstructed as a Federal-style building with 19 beautifully designed rooms, honoring its storied past while embracing a bright future.
